'Shodō' (the Way of Writing) goes far beyond simply writing characters. It views calligraphy as a meditative practice in which the flow of ink and the movement of the brush are closely connected.
In Shodō, the brush is not merely a tool for writing; it is also an instrument for expressing the artist's emotions and inner state. A defining characteristic of Japanese calligraphy is the emphasis on the balance between form and empty space. This balance shapes the character of each individual stroke and reveals the harmony between what is drawn and what is left untouched.
Every brushstroke is a moment of creation, emerging through the flow of breath and movement.
Shodō can be practised in a variety of contexts, ranging from spiritual and religious texts to works of art presented in exhibitions. It is also frequently used to decorate paper, murals and folding fans. In Japan, calligraphy is also commonly taught in schools, where it helps students develop discipline and artistic skill.
'One stroke. One moment. A connection between tradition and modernity.'
The combination of a contemporary painting style and traditional Japanese calligraphy demonstrates how historical artistic techniques can continue to evolve within contemporary contexts.
Using ink as a medium makes it possible to combine the precise, meditative structure of calligraphy with the free and expressive nature of modern painting.
This fusion of tradition and innovation opens up an enormous range of creative possibilities, in which ink becomes not merely a medium, but a means of expressing a profound and personal creative process.

Born in Düsseldorf, Germany, I have been running my own web and graphic design studio there for almost 20 years.
I live in Düsseldorf Niederkassel district. Alongside Germanys only Japantown, the area is home to the cultural centre of the Japanese community, the EKŌ-Haus, with its Japanese temple set within a beautifully landscaped Japanese garden.
This is where my fascination with Japanese culture and art began.
For several years, I have been studying Japanese calligraphy (Shodō) with Shodō master Rie Wada at the EKŌ-Haus in Düsseldorf, as well as Japanese ink painting (Sumi-e) there.
The gallery offers an insight into my paintings and calligraphic works.
